Studio Café In Westport: Coffee, Daytime Dining & Stunning Design

Stephanie Webster

Studio Cafe may be Westport’s best kept secret, and one of CT’s most beautiful spaces to enjoy casual daytime dining. This unique breakfast and lunch spot, situated within the vibrantly stunning interiors and furniture design boutique, The Tailored Home, mirrors the indulgently rich aesthetics of the design shop, but offers diners a subtly delicious well crafted wholesome menu. It is the food that Studio Café owners, Jhon Ortiz and Scott Falciglia, like to eat themselves…alongside a large number of regular guests who jokingly begged me not to share the word on this spot that has become part of their daily routine. As owner Falciglia says, “It's easy to get excited about this place daily.” I concur.

After traveling extensively, Ortiz and Falciglia moved to Westport, where they felt there was a need for something new in town.

“It’s nice to have a place to recharge when you’re out and about, someplace approachable, where you can occupy a table with no rush, and just order a macchiato and a cheese plate,” says Falciglia.

And we do recommend that you order that macchiato, as Studio Cafe’s coffee and tea program is outstanding, and much like their interior design, quite unique. A few of our repeat orders are their Licorice Cloud latte with licorice slippery elm and fennel, topped with sage dust and the beautifully executed Matcha lattes.

“When we started traveling regularly to Spain, we became used to the caliber of their espresso service, the coffee machines, the beans, the preparation…we really missed that, so we recreated it here.”

Spain’s influence can also be seen in their house made Empanadas, Tortilla Soup, and Tortilla Española.

The duo meet most mornings between 7-8am for breakfast. “It’s an important part of our routine. We usually share the parfait, avocado toast and oatmeal, plus lattes and our signature Moringa juice,” (my personal favorites are the Grapefruit, Celery, Carrot Ginger Juice and the Tamarind Puree).  In chatting with the cafe’s guests, The Lyrebird, a classic dish with two scrambled eggs, bacon, sliced avocado and toasted country bread, and the Salmon Studio Sandwich, smoked salmon with sliced zucchini on a puff pastry, also seemed to be in high demand.

“I like having a menu that takes care of my gut and my body with simple home cooked dishes”, says Falciglia.

Each piece is designed individually rather than part of a line or season and results in a curated look. The fabrics, papers and finishes all come from The Tailored Home’s materials library. Lunch is served atop old wallpaper sample placemats.

“We believe being materials experts makes us better designers. And we wanted to design a place that people felt welcome to include in their routines.”

“Our design aesthetic is unusual but we think it’s important enough to showcase at the cafe. Design through hospitality is a great way to show what’s possible through our furniture and design business,” says Falciglia.

As a person who is deeply moved by aesthetics, catching the early morning sun beneath the palm trees in their garden, with a thoughtful playlist running is a little slice of heaven.

But lately they’ve been feeling another void that needs filling in the towns restaurant scene. A place to be sober in the evening. Studio Cafe has expanded their hours this month until 8pm and will be adding low/zero proof drinks, like the Aqua Amargo, a super lemony club soda with a heavy splash of bitters. The Mocktail menu will expand over the next few months.

The pair believe that hospitality starts with a thoughtfully kept space. Falciglia says, “People should show up for one another. And we wanted to show up for our guests as a place of wonder, joy, and a reliable stop on your day,”

If you haven’t stopped by Studio Café in Westport, it is surely worth a visit. Grab a perfectly made latte or host a meeting at one of their sunlit tables and enjoy the menu and the view. It’s a bit like sitting in a modern art museum right in the heart of Westport.
